Once in outlook express
go to the tools, options menu check when starting go directly to the inbox, and apply your changes.
Under the view menu select layout and uncheck contacts,
uncheck the folder bar,
uncheck the outlook bar,
uncheck views bar,
uncheck show the preview pane.
