Using MS-Word 2003, but this same technique will work in MS-Word 2000. Directions for Removing Hard Returns from a document

. Select the text in which you want to remove unwanted manual hard returns. I prefer to do this for one paragraph at a time so as to prevent all of the text from ending up into one huge paragraph.

. Use Control+H to open the Replace dialog box.
. Be sure that the Find Edit field is empty.
. Use Shift+Tab to move to the "Special Button Menu"
. Press enter to open this menu. (Note, the space bar does not work here.)
. Select "Paragraph Mark". This should be the first item on the list, but if it is not, use your up and down arrows to find it.
. Press Enter to select.
. Tab to the "Replace" edit Field.
. Be sure this field is empty.
. Press the Space bar to place an empty space that will be used to replace the hard returns.
. Tab to replace all and press the space bar.
. When this process is done, a dialog box will come up telling you how many replacements were completed.
. You will need to get out of this dialog box, and then close the Replace dialog box.
