Tips about Acrobat Reader 5.

You will find some PDF files on the web. To download the PDF to your hard drive instead of having it open in your browser window, run Acrobat Reader 5 and press control K for preferences.
Arrow down to options and then tab until you find display PDF in browser and uncheck it. That way when you enter on a link for a PDF it will give you a download dialog and you can save the PDF to your hard drive. Then just enter on the filename and it will open locally in Adobe Reader.

You have to use control page up and control page down to go from one page to the prior page or the next page. Or you can set it to deliver more than one page at a time.

1. Press CTRL-K
2. Type an 'A' for Accessibility
3. Press ALT-D to uncheck the checkbox labeled, "Deliver data in pages when document exceeds"

Some PDF files with columns do not read correctly. You can give this a try, it seems to help with some PDF files with columns but not others.
Go into the Document Menu, arrow up to select reading order, and choose left to right, top to bottom without interactive form fields. That should disable the column recognition and reading.

Some authors of PDF files have protected them so you are not able to access the PDF with a screen reader. There is a program that might help.

The program is Advanced PDF Password Recovery (APDFPR). A demo that's limited to files of less than 64K and that doesn't have the command line interface enabled; as well as purchase information; is available at:

To use it with Jaws, you should run the Auto Graphics Labeler the first time because the menus aren't otherwise accessible.
