The following instructions will cause the alert to be turned off in every application. If you want to turn it off only in selected applications, you'll have to make sure that there's a .jcf configuration file in your user files folder for the application you want to modify and use the instructions below to modify _that_ configuration.
1. Press the Windows Key to go to the Start Menu.
2. Press P to open the Programs submenu.
3. Press the letter J until you hear "JAWS 8.0."
4. Press the RIGHT ARROW twice until you hear "Explore My settings."
5. Press ENTER. This opens your JAWS user files folder.
6. Locate the Default.jcf file. This will have been created in your user
files folder if you have made any changes whatever to the installed version of JAWS--changes like adjusting the speed or pitch of the speech, etc.
7. Open this file in any text editor (Word, Notepad, etc.).
8. Look for the line containing:
[options]
9. Press the END key to move to the end of this line.
10. Press ENTER to create a new line. On that new line, place the following exactly as it appears here:
TopAndBottomEdgeAlert=0
It's critical that you use upper and lower case as in the example line. If you can, you should just copy and paste the line as it appears above.
11. Save your change and exit the text editor.
12. Close Windows Explorer.
13. Unload and then, re-load JAWS. You should no longer hear the alert sound when you navigate to the top or bottom of a list.
